It is counted as a smokeless fuel; that is, the carbon is sufficiently pure that burning it causes substantially less air pollution than burning the original uncarbonized organic material would. In the 20th century, clean-air legislation mandated smokeless fuels (mostly coke or charcoal) in many areas of Europe.

Yes, charcoal is a biomass fuel because it is produced from organic, plant-based materials, such as wood, agricultural residues, or waste. Biomass fuels are renewable and can be quickly replenished, unlike fossil fuels like coal. Charcoal is made by heating these organic materials in a process called pyrolysis or carbonization, which uses limited or no oxygen.

Volunteer FAQs

We have a number of volunteer opportunities for individuals and groups, whether you want to volunteer once a year or on a regular basis.

If you’re looking to volunteer in one of our factories at a community site, check out our volunteer registration calendar for specific dates and times, and to register for an upcoming shift. All volunteers must register in advance.

The minimum age to volunteer is 12. All volunteers under the age of 18 must have a signed electronic permission slip on file at least 48 hours before volunteering. There are chaperone requirements for youths under 18:
• Youths ages 12 to 15 must have 1 adult for every 5 youths.
• Individual 16 and 17-year olds can volunteer without a chaperone.
• Groups of 16 and 17-year olds require 1 adult for every 10 youths.
• Some volunteer opportunities have other age requirements.

Yes. Every volunteer under 18 must have a signed permission slip on file with us. Youths must register with their information and include an accurate email address for their parent or guardian. A permission slip will be emailed to your parent or guardian and only needs to be signed once.

The dress code in the warehouse and at food distribution sites is casual and comfortable. Please note the following requirements:

  • Closed toed shoes are required. Comfortable, safe footwear must be worn, including sneakers, work shoes or boots. Anyone wearing high heels, open toed shoes or sandals will not be allowed to volunteer.
  • Long pants are highly recommended but not required.
  • For warehouse shifts, we recommend that you wear comfortable shoes (our warehouse has concrete floors) and a light layer, as our warehouse can be cold. If you need more details or would like to discuss your particular situation, please email us.
  • For food distributions, we recommended that you dress warmly in the winter and lightly in the summer, as you may be outside.
  • No necklaces or long earrings.
  • Our Cypress location has lockers that volunteers can use. Otherwise, we recommend volunteers leave purses, jewelry and other valuables at home or locked in your trunk. Second Harvest is not responsible for any missing personal belongings.

Yes! Our warehouses and community distribution sites can accommodate groups of five or more. Groups of four or fewer are treated as individual volunteers. The maximum group size varies depending on where and when you want to volunteer, but in general, we can accommodate groups of up to 25 to sort food at our Cypress Center location. Due to limited staff resources, the Curtner Center is designed to welcome adult, individual volunteers only.

Community food distribution sites generally need individuals and group capacity depends on the space limitations and the number of regularly attending volunteers at each site. In general, food distribution sites can accept groups of 10 or less.

Please be mindful of what you can realistically commit to when making a group reservation. We heavily rely on volunteers, and it is critical that groups bring the number of people they commit to. We encourage group leaders to monitor their group size and contact us if the expected number decreases. Group leaders can see who has registered within the group, with the email address of the group leader and the reservation number (GB-####).

Due to limited resources, we cannot accommodate walk-in volunteers. To participate at the charcoal production factory, all volunteers must register for the shift at least 24-hours prior to the shift start time.

Program FAQs

The Group Biomass Sustainable Biomass Program (SBP) is a certification scheme designed for woody biomass, mostly in the form of, charcoal, biochar, biogas. wood pellets and woodchips, used in industrial, large scale renewable energy production. It exists primarily to enable producers and End-users of woody biomass to demonstrate that the biomass is both legally and sustainably sourced and that, as a minimum, it meets the relevant regulatory requirements, as well as the ability to collect and report on energy and carbon balance calculations for the full supply chain.

To expand the contribution of good biomass to the global bioeconomy.

As a sourcing standard, we focus on the legality and sustainability aspects and attributes of feedstock used in biomass production. Our unique Data Transfer System tracks woody biomass transactions along the supply chain, collecting and collating data to enable life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions calculations to be made.

To have global applicability and recognition, and to facilitate the responsible use of good biomass that both meets our stakeholders’ needs and generates beneficial outcomes for climate, nature and society.
